Job Description
The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school, as well as to various extracurricular activities. This role requires adherence to traffic laws, safety protocols, and school district policies to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safe Transportation:
- Operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner on assigned routes.
- Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and school district policies.
- Ensure the safety of students during boarding, transit, and deboarding.
- Route Management:
- Follow designated routes and time schedules.
- Adjust routes as necessary in response to road conditions, weather, and other factors.
- Student Supervision:
- Maintain discipline and ensure student safety on the bus.
- Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus safely.
- Provide first aid or emergency assistance as needed.
- Bus Maintenance:
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus.
- Report any mechanical issues or maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel.
- Ensure the bus is clean and presentable at all times.
- Communication:
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and transportation personnel.
- Report any incidents, accidents, or delays to the Transportation Manager promptly.
- Participate in safety meetings and training sessions as required.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, mileage, and any incidents.
- Complete required documentation and reports in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Licensure:
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Clean driving record.
- Experience:
- Previous experience as a school bus driver or in a similar role preferred.
- Familiarity with local routes and geography is a plus.
- Skills:
- Excellent driving skills and knowledge of traffic laws.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage time effectively and adhere to schedules.
- Basic first aid and CPR certification is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
- Ability to assist students with special needs, which may require lifting or helping them board and exit the bus.
- Good vision and hearing, with or without corrective devices.
- Ability to pass a physical examination as required by state and federal regulations.
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed inside a school bus.
- Exposure to various weather conditions while driving.
- Noise levels can be moderate to high.
