Job Description

The Library Assistant supports daily operations of the library by providing customer service, assisting patrons with locating resources, managing circulation activities, and performing various administrative tasks. This role is crucial for maintaining an organized, welcoming, and efficient library environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Customer Service:
    • Assist patrons with locating books, using the catalog system, and accessing other library resources.
    • Provide guidance on library services, policies, and procedures.
    • Respond to inquiries in person, via phone, and through email.
  2. Circulation Duties:
    • Check in and check out library materials to patrons.
    • Process new library card registrations and maintain accurate patron records.
    • Handle overdue notices and manage the return of borrowed items.
  3. Collection Maintenance:
    • Shelve returned books and materials accurately.
    • Conduct regular shelf reading to ensure materials are in correct order.
    • Assist in the processing and cataloging of new acquisitions.
  4. Administrative Tasks:
    • Maintain and update library databases and records.
    • Assist with inventory and reporting.
    • Help with library programs, events, and displays.
  5. Technology Support:
    • Assist patrons with using library computers, printers, and other equipment.
    • Troubleshoot basic technical issues with library systems and resources.
  6. Other Duties:
    • Support library outreach activities and community engagement efforts.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Library Manager or Head Librarian.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or a related field preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working in a library or customer service role is preferred.
    • Familiarity with library cataloging systems and databases is an asset.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
    • Proficiency in using computers and basic office software.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry books and other materials up to 25 pounds.
